The fact that the engagement of NGOs in crisis countries can also be counterproductive has meanwhile become part of the development discourse. American political scientist Patrice C. McMahon goes one step further in her controversial book. She puts forward the thesis that international NGOs in post-conflict societies practice a “benevolent colonialism” that only benefits the elites and not civil society. However, it almost exclusively refers to Bosnia and Kosovo; further examples would have done the book good.
