New impulses for global challenges

Companies are increasingly important partners in development cooperation. In addition to proven instruments such as public-private partnerships, this increasingly relies on innovative cooperation models in order to mobilize the power of the economy to solve concrete "development challenges". For companies - from world market leaders to startups - this creates interesting perspectives from the application of new technologies to concrete market (entry) opportunities.

The Außenwirtschaft Austria The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber recently sought solutions for the water shortage in Cape Town with the AgriWater Innovation Challenge and organized a matchmaking event in Cape Town for the winners: a Styrian startup scored points with its energy-saving water purification method. In the meantime, numerous development agencies are focusing on competitions in which creative solutions to challenges such as post-harvest losses in specific country contexts are sought and implemented together. The German Development Agency GIZ goes one step further. Together with its representatives and German and international experts, it develops innovative solutions to specific challenges with its Lab of Tomorrow. One example is the transport of vital medicines by drone to remote villages in Africa.

The corporAID Multilogue "Challenging Development" examined these cooperation models and discussed

  • how to create innovative business solutions to global challenges;
  • how startups and established companies become development cooperation partners;
  • and how an ecosystem can look for such new forms of collaboration.
